Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will star in a new Walking Dead spin-off called Isle of the Dead, AMC announced Monday. The show, expected to air in 2023, will focus on Cohen and Morgan’s respective characters, Maggie and Negan, as they travel to Manhattan, which has since been “cut off from the mainland.”
“The crumbling city is filled with the dead and residents who have turned New York into their own world, full of anarchy, danger, beauty and horror,” AMC said in a press release. It will premiere on both AMC and AMC Plus, with the first season spanning six episodes.

The Walking Dead writer and co-executive producer Eli Giorne will serve as showrunner and executive producer. The Walking Dead content director Scott M. Gimple will oversee the show, with Cohan and Morgan serving as executive producers. In a preview image teasing the show, the Isle of the Dead appears to be a reference to the first episode of The Walking Dead, which shares the same title as the sign on the door: “Don’t open, dead inside.” (Or is it “Don’t open all the way inside?” Your guess is as good as mine.)
“I’m glad Negan and Maggie’s journey continues. It’s been such a ride in Negan’s shoes, I’m thrilled to continue his journey in New York with Lauren,” Morgan said in a statement. “Walkers in urban environments have always been this cool way, but 5th Avenue, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty? The greatest city in the world??
If you’ve lost count of how many The Walking Dead spin-offs there are, you’re not alone. Fear the Walking Dead is currently in its seventh season and a limited series called The Walking Dead: World Beyond has already been completed. Tales of the Walking Dead, an anthology series, is currently in development along with a spin-off of Carol & Daryl starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride. Andrew Lincoln will also star in three films as Rick Grimes.
The final season of The Walking Dead – its 11th season – will run until the end of March.
