An unoccupied building in Old Quebec is urgently demolished

The collapsing residential building at 45 Avenue Sainte-Geneviève in Quebec had to be demolished quickly by the authorities on Friday. The building was uninhabited, however, residents of the outbuilding cannot return to their homes immediately.

In response to an 911 call about a dangerous structure, officers arrived at the scene after 5 p.m. Friday.

After an analysis, the City of Quebec civil engineer recommended the demolition of the vacant two-story building and the evacuation of nearby homes.

The reasons why the structure of the building entered this state of instability are currently unknown.

A total of 17 residents had to be evacuated. The Red Cross was there to help the victims.

A mechanical shovel was used to demolish the building. At 1:00 a.m. the work was finished.

All residents, except for those living in the annexe of the demolished building, have been able to return to their homes.

According to a historical file available on the University of Laval website, 45 Avenue Sainte-Geneviève was built in 1896.
