Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions after Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. With that, Pep Guardiola’s side are one step closer to a remarkable treble.

City are just two finals away from becoming the first English side since Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in 1999 to clinch the treble – the first being the FA Cup final against United at Wembley on June 3, followed by the Champions -League final against Inter Milan in Istanbul on June 10th.

Arsenal’s result means they are unable to catch City in the Premier League race as Mikel Arteta’s side are four points adrift with just one game to go.

City’s next game is on Sunday when they take on Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.

The club have now won the Premier League in five of the last six seasons. This year’s triumph is their ninth top-flight title in their history and the seventh since Abu Dhabi-owning City Football Group took over the club in 2008.

Club captain Ilkay Gündogan described the recent title as something “very special”.

“The Premier League is without a doubt the most demanding and competitive league in the world, that says a lot about what an achievement that is,” he said.

“This team is so talented and so special and to be captain this season has been a tremendous privilege.”

“To have won this trophy three times in a row and five times in six years is incredible. That quality and consistency encapsulates what Manchester City stands for and ensures the club will continue to strive for success in the future.”

Pep Guardiola’s side started the season in fine form, buoyed by summer signing Erling Haaland’s unprecedented goal, but City had to settle for second place after 14 games as the Premier League rebounded for the World Cup in Qatar in November winter break went.

Meanwhile, City were charged by the Premier League in February for breaching financial rules in nine seasons. There is still the possibility of indefinite sanctions which could include fines, point deductions or relegation. The city continues to deny the allegations.

The Premier League returned after the World Cup on December 26 and City proved their dominance. City not only secured two victories over Arsenal but also embarked on an 11-game winning streak that helped them lift the league title for the third straight year.

Haaland has scored a record 36 goals in a season in the Premier League and was named FWA Men’s Footballer of the Year.

City have also won two FA Cup titles and five League Cup trophies since 2008.
