Kevin Houle: a passion he inherited from his mother

The many dramas of Quebec television characters managed to capture and hold Kevin Houle’s attention throughout his childhood and adolescence. So much so, in fact, that almost every 1990s show featured happier times with family!

Kevin, which shows influenced you in your youth?

I remember getting interested in television when I could listen to dramatic shows. Yes, I’ve listened to Passe-Partout and mostly family films, but the TV memories I have are from when I was able to start listening to drama series. My earliest memories were Caleb’s Daughters and Lance and Count. I was probably too young to listen to that. (laughs) My parents didn’t put any big restrictions on my age.

Where did this interest come from?

I didn’t think I was a child. I really got into the characters. They were people doing real business for a living… I found it very compelling, I was very emotionally involved.

So your best TV memories are the moments you spend with your family?

Yes. Television was a common place for the whole family. My mother watched a lot of TV and I remember her. She passed, but I have very fond memories of watching TV as a family and talking about it together. My mom had mountains of VHS and to this day I don’t know how she managed to pull it all off… If you can name a show from the 1990’s I can associate it with a happy memory. We listened to everything.

Young, did you feel the need to be on TV?

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be an actor […] I experienced a happy childhood with little drama while the characters thrived on it; It looked like fun to play it safe!

Do you think you’ve watched too much TV?

No way. I know it can be a problem because there are people who are connected to it and don’t talk to each other anymore, who don’t have a social life anymore. I understand the passive aspect that TV can have, but personally I find that between watching TV and swiping on TikTok, there’s something much more connecting, connecting to family and society about TV. Every day I fear that it will be lost with the platforms … I have a longing for when we were all listening to the same program at the same time that all of Quebec was following the story at the same time In my opinion, television is the bulwark of Quebec culture, but it’s falling apart due to the number of platforms and American pressure.
