Michigan Football Staffer Shemy Shembechler Resigns Amid Social Media Controversy – MLive.com

Shemy Schembechler’s tenure on the Michigan football team was short-lived.

The son of longtime Wolverines head coach Bo Schembechler resigned on Saturday following controversy surrounding his now-deactivated Twitter account. Shemy Schembechler, a former NFL scout, was hired as an assistant recruiting director on Jim Harbaugh’s staff earlier this week.

“Effective this afternoon, Shemy Schembechler has resigned from Michigan Football,” Michigan said in a statement on behalf of Harbaugh and athletic director Warde Manuel. “We are aware of some comments and likes on social media that have caused concern and pain to individuals in our community. Michigan Athletics is fully committed to providing a place where our coaches, staff and student-athletes feel welcome, and where we fully support the university’s and athletic department’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.”

Though Schembechler’s social media page has been taken down, screenshots of his account liking anti-racial posts have surfaced.

On Wednesday, Schembechler announced his departure on social media, writing that he was “very honored to return to Ann Arbor,” where he also played for his father.

Before joining Harbaugh’s staff, he worked as an area scout for the Las Vegas Raiders from 2019 to 2023 but was reportedly fired in February. He has also served in the Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks, and Washington Commanders organizations.

Michigan’s football program has two consecutive Big Ten championships under its belt but has been the subject of controversy off the field for the past nine months.

Last October, running back Donovan Edwards apologized after retweeting an anti-Semitic comment in a Kanye West video. Michigan also came under scrutiny after star defensive tackle Mazi Smith was arrested but not suspended for gun possession in October.

In January, Michigan received a draft NCAA notice of allegations of alleged recruiting and practice violations, including a Level I violation — the most serious — against Harbaugh.

Later that month, Michigan fired co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss for “inappropriately” accessing computer accounts of others at the school.
