At least 12 dead in crowds at football stadium in El Salvador – CNN

CNN –

At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured in a crowd at a football stadium in the El Salvador capital on Saturday, the National Civil Police (PNC) said on Twitter.

“The first information indicates a rush of fans who tried to watch the game between Alianza and FAS at Cuscatlán Stadium,” said the PNC.

Salvadoran Health Minister Francisco Alabi said on Twitter that emergency teams were deployed and the injured were being transferred to local hospitals.

Around 90 people, including minors, are being treated for injuries – most are in “stable” condition, he added.

President Nayib Bukele said the national police and the Attorney General’s Office would conduct a “full investigation” into the incident.

“Everyone is under investigation: teams, managers, stadium, ticket office, league, federation, etc. Whoever is at fault, they will not go unpunished,” Bukele tweeted.

Video provided by El Salvador’s National Civil Police showed several ambulances and paramedics parked in front of the stadium rushing to the scene of the accident.

Photos taken from inside the stadium also showed crowds, many wearing the white and blue jersey colors.

Alianza and FAS are two of the Central American country’s most popular football teams.
