Conflict and climate crisis threaten global health, warns UN

During the annual opening of the World Health Organization (WHO) assembly this Sunday, the holder recognized the collaborative spirit and achievements of this organization, as well as the risks involved.

“Life expectancy around the world has increased by more than 50 percent; infant mortality has fallen by 60 percent in 30 years; smallpox were eradicated; and polio is close to being eradicated,” he added.

However, wars and conflicts endanger millions of people and the health of billions is at risk from the climate crisis, he warned, calling for global cooperation to contain these threats.

“We can get back on the path of progress. We can make our health and wellness ambitions a reality for everyone. But only if the world works together. “If we work together despite the tensions in relations between nations,” he stressed.

The headline called for long-term public health advancement to strengthen WHO’s independence, authority and funding, which is at the heart of international efforts.

Such a body should play an important coordinating role in the fight against the next pandemic, he added.

The WHO appointment began this Sunday in Geneva, Switzerland, and focused on commemorating the organization’s 75th anniversary and recognizing important advances in public health.

The goal of the assembly is to get states to ensure more stable funding to carry out their work and to support a new international treaty to enable the world to better face future pandemics.
