The long Patriots’ holiday was brutal on the streets of Quebec as the death toll rose to at least eight dead and a dozen injured last night.
The latest accident in the sad history of traffic happened at Baie-Saint-Paul in Charlevoix late yesterday afternoon, where two drivers were injured in a collision. One of them was still fighting for his life at the time of writing.
Earlier this morning in Boucherville, another motorist died after rolling over at the end of a police chase on the A-30 in Boucherville.
Since Friday, Le Journal has found at least eight dead and twelve injured in ten traffic accidents across Quebec. With the accidents that killed Isabelle Sylvestre, 28, from Trois-Rivières, and Fabienne Houde-Bastien, 31, from Montreal, Sunday was the worst day.
On Sunday evening around 8 p.m., Isabelle Sylvestre died during a spectacular road trip on the Ring Saint-Charles in Saint-Léon-le-Grand in Mauricie.
“She would have lost control of the vehicle and rolled over one or more times before being ejected,” said Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokeswoman Catherine Bernard.
Fabienne Bastien-Houle died after being hit by two vehicles in Montreal.
The two drivers would have collided before hitting the pedestrian.
One of the drivers, a 40-year-old, was arrested for poor driving.

Three similar events took place on the same day in Mauricie, Lanaudière and the Hautes-Laurentides.
Carole Girard, 66, died after losing control of her mountain bike in Chertsey, in the Lanaudière region.
Nathalie Desmeules, 53, of Montreal, was killed in a head-on collision on Route 155 in La Bostonnais, Mauricie. A man and woman were also injured in the accident, one of whom was on the brink of life and death at the time of writing.
A 43-year-old motorist was also killed in a wooded area near Route 117 in Labelle in the Hautes-Laurentides after being struck from behind by another vehicle.
On a motorcycle
The long holiday had already started tragically when two motorcyclists died in less than 24 hours.
On Friday night, a man in his 40s was killed when he crashed into a Hydro Quebec pole on Avenue Royale in Saint-Ferreol-les-Neiges.
The following day, a man in his 50s died in a swerve on Route 132 near Rimouski on Saturday night.
The SQ was due to release its road record today.
