FBI Season 5 Finale Synopsis: Scola Must Choose Nina Or Her Baby

The fifth season finale of CBS’ FBI revolved around the hunt for a serial killer with a god complex who turned against those who, in one way or another, control people’s destiny.

Simultaneously with this case of the week, Special Agent Stuart Scola (played by John Boyd) was also asked – truly challenged – to “play god” by making an impossible decision.

FBI Nina BabyThe unexpected odyssey of Scola and her pregnant partner, agent Nina Chase, began when Nina (Shantel VanSanten) got really dizzy on the hour while thinking about color swatches for the nursery. She tried to dismiss it as nothing, but a medical exam later, she and Scola broke the news: Nina was suffering from a listeria (bacteria) infection that threatens to spread to her placenta and the baby’s heart rate swayed is already beginning to decline. Therefore, treatment had to be started by giving Nina antibiotics while monitoring the little one’s heart rate. In the worst case, they have to induce labour, even if Nina’s delivery is only 12 weeks due.

Scola soon turned his attention to the case of the week after receiving an urgent call from the hospital. Nina’s condition is “more complicated than we thought,” the doctor told the father-to-be, and a specialist is on the way to induce labor. The infection “did a lot of damage to both Nina and the baby,” the doctor explained, and therefore “there’s a chance we can only save one of them.”

And since Scola has Nina’s medical stand-in, he has to decide as soon as possible which of the two should have priority for the medical team – mother or child.

Moments later, Scola announces his decision, saying, “Of course I pray to God they’re both going to be okay. But if there’s a problem and you have to make a decision … Nina should be your priority.” And the doctors went to work.

Towards the end of the episode, we saw Scola enter Nina’s hospital room, curl up in bed next to her, and comfort her. With the week’s case resolved, the team gathered at the hospital to await news. The doctor appeared and led them down the hall, where they leaned Scola against the nursery window.

“Scola, are you alright?” asked Isobel.

“I am now,” he replied, smiling at his team and nodding at a newborn in the nursery. “Guys, this is Douglas,” he said, naming his and Nina’s son after his late brother.
