IN WHICH CASES SHOULD I GET A NEW GREEN CARD?

You must replace your permanent residence card if:

  • It has expired or will expire in the next six months.
  • The document has been lost, stolen, torn, or destroyed.
  • Your card contains incorrect information.
  • You never received the card you were previously issued with.

Who can apply for a new Green Card?

In these cases you are entitled to carry out the procedure:

  • You received your card before your 14th birthday and are 14 years old (unless the card expires before your 16th birthday).
  • You have lawfully changed the name or other biographical information on the card since you last received your card.
  • You commute daily between your home in Mexico and your work (commuter or cross-border) and are now a resident of the United States.
  • You were a permanent resident of the United States and now have commuter status.
  • Their status has been converted to permanent resident status (this includes special agricultural workers moving to permanent resident status).
  • You have an older version of your alien registration card (such as USCIS forms AR-3, AR-103, or I-151 that are no longer valid to prove your immigration status) and need to replace it with a current permanent resident card.

How does the green card renewal process work?

If you do not have a USCIS account, you must create one online to submit your application virtually. To complete the exchange of your permanent residence card, you need to follow the steps below:

  • Enter the USCIS link
  • You must complete Form I-90, Application for Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) Replacement;
  • Submit evidence and pay fees online
  • Receive updates on the status of your case, view the history and close the case
  • Contact USCIS and respond to requests for evidence.

HOW MUCH DOES THE GREEN CARD RENEW OR REPLACE?

The cost of renewal is free in some cases, in others there is a cost. Fees vary depending on why the new card is needed.

The average cost for the replacement application is $455 and $85 for biometric services. In the event that the previous card was issued but never received, there is no charge. It will also not be paid out if incorrect information is present on the card due to an error by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
