Bouquets were placed outside the Aldwych Theater in London tonight, where a screening of the Tina Turner musical was drawing to a close – while fans grappled with her death.

The legendary singer died today at the age of 83 at her home in Küsnach near Zurich, Switzerland, after a long, unspecified illness. Her representatives confirmed her death with the words: “With her, the world loses a music legend and role model.”

Fans watching the musical in the West End tonight were told of her death during the show’s break, as the cast took the stage to break the “very emotional” news to the audience. The company then continued the performance.

In a career spanning more than 60 years, Turner has won eight Grammy Awards and was one of the world’s most popular entertainers, known for a core of pop, rock and rhythm and blues darlings.

Their last stadium concert was in Sheffield in 2009. But the musical, which has been running in the West End since 2018 and is shown in theaters across the United States, remembers her. Turner also served as the show’s producer.

Sisters Barbara and Izzy, 65 and 69, from Leeds, West Yorkshire, told Web there were “gasps” in the audience when their deaths were announced.

They said it was “poignant” and “gloomy,” but Turner “would have wanted the show to go on” — which made the cast “brilliant.”

Tony Ansell, 64, from Northampton, Northamptonshire, laid a bouquet of flowers outside the Aldwych in tribute to the late Queen of Rock ‘N’ Roll before the crowd left the theatre. He said Turner had “inspired millions across Britain”.

And Lynn and Malcom Smith, from Colchester, Essex, said their deaths were “heartbreaking” and that there was an atmosphere of “sadness and happiness” in the theater.

Ms Smith said she could see the “emotions” and “tears” on the face of leading actor Zurin Villanueva.

Meanwhile, David and Leanne McNamara, 52 and 52, have traveled from Australia to see the performance with their in-laws Teresa Walters, 68, and Ben Walters, 65.

They said they were “stunned” when her death was announced after the break.

The four added that Tina Turner’s music had meant so much to them since the star performed The Best at the 1993 Australian rugby league Grand Final.

Gerard Mawn, 61, traveled from New York City, USA, and said he saw the performance all over the US and Germany, although he didn’t speak German.

He was scheduled to watch Thursday’s performance but said, with tears streaming down his face, he didn’t know if he could “see” it now.

Mr Mawn said Tina was an inspiration to him because “she’s a survivor” who “said yes to herself when others said no”.

And Aurin Makepeace, 40, said audiences were “moved” and she’s been listening to her music ever since her mother made her skip school as a child to clean the house while her records were playing.

Both fans and stars paid tribute to Turner today following the announcement of her death.

Sir Mick Jagger, with whom she shared electrifying chemistry on stage, Gloria Gaynor, Rick Astley, Paloma Faith and model Naomi Campbell were among the first celebrities to honor the singer.

“I am so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. “She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer,” wrote Jagger.

“She was inspirational, warm, funny and generous.” She helped me a lot in my youth and I will never forget her.’

Giorgio Armani, with whom she was close friends, said: “I heard the death of Tina Turner with sadness and disbelief: with her incredible energy, she seemed to be eternal.” Her music certainly is.

“I’m going to miss a great friend who I’ve had the pleasure of dressing many times.” Life was like being on stage – pure energy. I am deeply saddened.’

A musical legend: Turner in 1997. In a recent interview, she said she wanted to be remembered as “the queen of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Turner’s infamously tumultuous life and relationships have been the subject of numerous adaptations, both on stage and screen.

Her autobiography I, Tina was adapted into the 1993 film What’s Love Got To Do With It, which dramatized the mother-of-two’s relationship with Ike Turner. In addition, Angela Bassett was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Tina in the biopic.

Turner married her longtime German boyfriend, music manager Erwin Bach, in a Swiss civil ceremony in 2013 and has lived with him in Switzerland since 1994.

It was the second marriage for the music star, who was previously married to musician Ike from 1962 to 1978.

In her 1986 book, the singer shared a harrowing story of abuse, including breaking her nose during her marriage to Ike.

Ike died in December 2007 and Tina’s spokeswoman at the time was quoted as saying, “Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today.” She had not been in contact with him for 35 years. No further comment will be made.’

In recent years she has suffered from health problems, in 2016 she was diagnosed with colon cancer and in 2017 she had to undergo a kidney transplant.

In the 2018 autobiography Tina Turner: My Love Story, she revealed that Bach saved her life by donating one of his kidneys.

Her famous track list over the years includes the Bond theme song for 1995’s GoldenEye with a song of the same name co-written by Bono with The Edge of U2 and other tracks include We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome), “What’s Love Got to Do With It”, “Private Dancer”, “Let’s Stay Together” and many more.

At the 2008 Grammys, she duetted with Beyoncé for a rendition of “Proud Mary,” in which both powerful singers in glittering outfits mirrored each other’s choreographies.

Other notable duets throughout her career include appearances with David Bowie and in 1985 she shared the stage with Sir Mick and the Rolling Stones on Live Aid.

Last year, following the death of her son Ronnie at the age of 62, Turner said he “left the world far too soon”. Her other biological son, Craig Raymond Turner, died in 2018 at the age of 59.

In 2005, President George W. Bush described her legs as “the most famous in show business” and was reported to have insured them for hundreds of millions of dollars.

The musical based on her life, entitled Tina – The Tina Turner Musical, premiered in London’s West End in 2018.

Her career has spanned more than just music: she starred opposite Mel Gibson in the 1985 film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and also appeared in 1993’s Last Action Hero.

BMG boss Hartwig Masuch paid tribute to Turner after her death with the words: “There will always only be one Tina Turner.”

“Her music and her life journey have touched so many people.” Our condolences to her dear manager and husband Erwin and to all who loved her.”

Her solo work includes 10 studio albums, two live albums, two soundtracks and five compilations that have collectively sold more than 100 million records.

In an interview with The Guardian earlier this year, when asked how she would like to be remembered, she replied, “As the queen of rock ‘n’ roll.” As a woman who has shown other women it’s okay to be on to strive for success on your own.”
