All Democrats in the US House of Representatives have signed a petition to vote on raising the “clean” debt ceiling, that is, without making the increase contingent on public spending cuts. The announcement was made by Democratic Congressman Brendan Boyle via his Twitter account.

The petition garnered 213 signatures, the thirdhighest number of any such request in the United States since 1997, according to Boyle.

If the Democratic Party retains that support, it would only take five more votes from Republican lawmakers to get the bill passed.

But that must be a difficult task considering that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and his supporters have demanded that the Biden administration commit to budget cuts before raising the debt ceiling.

In late April, McCarthy won passage of a bill covering those requirements by a narrow 217 to 215 votes.

If approved, the “clean” debt ceiling would be sent to the Senate, where the Democratic Party holds a majority, for consideration.
