Quito, May 25, 2023.- On the morning of this Wednesday, May 24, 2023, officials from the Embassy of Cuba attended the laying of wreaths in front of the monument to the Grand Marshal of Ayacucho Antonio José de Sucre in the Plaza de Santo Domingo organized by the Consulate of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on the occasion of the 201st th Anniversary of the Battle of Pichincha.
Officials from the Venezuelan Consulate in Ecuador, Pichincha Prefecture authorities and the Antonio José de Sucre municipal education unit laid gifts of flowers at the foot of the monument to the Venezuelan and Latin American hero in Quito’s historic center.
In the words of Venezuelan Consul General Pedro Sassone, the Battle of Pichincha is an expression of integration, unity and heroism. Sucre’s example gives strength to resist and continue to fight for true independence.
The consul described the feat as a continuation of the Battle of Carabobo and the Battle of Boyacá that established Venezuela’s independence, part of what would later be Greater Colombia.
May 24th is considered a civic date for the heroes who sacrificed their lives for freedom.
The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, Ecuadorian social and political organizations, as well as Venezuelan residents and members of the “Mi Patria Venezuela” children’s choir.
The event was accompanied by the music band of the Municipal Educational Unit of Sucre and their group of bastoneras.
