A China-sponsored “cyber actor” has infiltrated critical infrastructure networks in the United States, Washington, its Western allies and Microsoft claimed on Wednesday (May 24), warning that similar campaigns could be taking place around the world.

In a joint statement, cybersecurity authorities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand warned of “a group of activities” linked to “a State of the People’s Republic of China-sponsored cyberactor, also known as…” Volt- Typhoon”. “This activity affects the networks of critical infrastructure sectors of the United States” and the company conducting the attack “could use the same techniques (…) anywhere in the world,” they added.

A military base in Guam was attacked

In a separate statement, Microsoft explained that “Volt Typhoon” has been active since mid-2021 and has, among other things, attacked critical infrastructure on the island of Guam, which houses a major US military base in the Pacific. This campaign carries the risk of “disrupting the critical communications infrastructure between the United States and Asia in future crises,” Microsoft warned. “The observed behavior indicates that the threat actor intends to spy and keep access (to the infrastructure) undetected for as long as possible,” the American tech giant added.
