The United States and its Western allies on Wednesday (May 24) accused a China-sponsored “cyber actor” of secretly infiltrating US “critical infrastructure.” In a joint statement, cybersecurity authorities in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand warned of a malicious “group” also known as “Volt Typhoon”.
In a separate press release, the American group Microsoft explained that Volt Typhoon has been active since mid-2021 and, among other things, has targeted critical infrastructure on the island of Guam, where a large American military base is located in the Pacific Ocean. This campaign carries the risk of “disrupting the critical communications infrastructure between the United States and Asia in future crises,” Microsoft warned.
The campaign targets “the communications, industrial, utilities, transport, construction, shipping, government, information technology and education sectors,” the US giant continued. According to Western security authorities, these attacks use the so-called “living off the land” tactic, in which the attacker uses the properties and tools of the system he is targeting to penetrate the system without leaving any traces.
