Gun-friendly GOP Governor Chris Sununu finds an unlikely ally in Whoopi Goldberg as she defends him from the boos of The View audience

  • Sununu, the Republican governor of New Hampshire, is seeking a presidential nomination
  • He told The View audience that he would “ban no guns,” prompting mockery

Republican New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu found an unlikely ally in Whoopi Goldberg today while being booed by The View audience for refusing to ban AR-15s.

Sununu, who is eyeing a presidential bid, was harshly criticized by the mostly liberal host group when the conversation turned to the AR-15.

When asked why he wouldn’t ban them in his state or at the federal level, he said, “[Gun violence is] not because people have access to guns. That’s because we don’t deal with mental health.

“We don’t give children access to mental health… I don’t ban guns!”

To Whoopi’s disgust, the audience began to hoot.

‘NO! No no no no. “No. No booing,” she scolded. Joy Behar joined in the rebuke.

“No Republican is ever going to come back here if you boo them,” she quipped.

Whoopi, still outraged, continued, “We need to talk to people to find out what they’re thinking and if they’re thinking right.”

“He’s not going to be perfect, none of them are.” But at least give people a chance to explain what’s going on.

‘We’ll be right back.’

Sununu had defended his state – “the safest in the country” – which has relatively few gun restrictions.

He pointed to Chicago, which has the toughest gun laws but also some of the worst gun violence.

“When people are in crisis, they have nowhere to turn.” They resort to violence. We’re not doing the right things when it comes to locking down and protecting our schools.

“No, I do not ban guns.” I will provide access to mental health. “We will get to the heart of the problem,” he said.

He also spoke out against letting schools decide what reading material is appropriate for children and vowed to leave power in the hands of local officials — as governor and possibly president.

He slammed Donald Trump — “the guy plays the victim card” — and accused Ron DeSantis of focusing his campaign solely on culture wars instead of talking about inflation, mental health or opioids.
