“Here is a sealed bottle of this wonderful product. The price is high, but I’m open to negotiation,” writes a Boucherville seller.
Another vendor in Vaudreuil saw it coming: He’s offering a case of 12 bottles of Sriracha sauce priced at $200 each.
The two offers have been on the marketplace for three and a week respectively. In both cases, the sellers have revised their prices down since the release of their releases, which is perhaps a sign that the enthusiasm isn’t there.
Note that nothing in the marketplace rules prohibits selling groceries online.
Two bottlenecks in two years
While California-based Huy Fong Foods, which supplies many countries, recently announced a new Sriracha sauce shortage, Asian hot sauce is becoming harder to find on our grocery store shelves.
There was also a shortage of sriracha last year, with Huy Fong Foods blaming droughts in Mexico and the U.S. Southwest for the lack of harvest of the chilies used in the sauce. The company said it was forced to halt production of the popular hot sauce and that Sriracha orders placed after mid-April would not be filled until September.
A Quebec company to the rescue
Due to inflation, Canada Sauce, a Saguenay-based company, decided to enter the Asian seasoning business.
“We had to reinvent ourselves,” admitted Simon-Pierre Murdock, President of Bottling Canada. “We have every intention of entering the market […] We continue and conquer market share. This is our conquest for the next 40 years.”
So the company decided to create their own Sriracha sauce recipe.
“Sriracha requires a cooking recipe technique very different from that of milk-fermented peppers. This recipe is secret and I can’t talk much about it because it’s part of the strategy,” Mr Murdock said.
Hot sauce lovers can expect several flavors of scriracha sauce launched by Canada Sauce this year.
