Last Saturday, a dog seriously bit a boy (9).
The Miniature Bull Terrier has now been put down in consultation with the dog’s owner.
Statistics on biting incidents in the canton of Zug do not show any accumulation of biting incidents in certain dog breeds.
On Saturday, May 20, 2023, a bite incident occurred in Neuheim in which a nine-year-old boy was injured by a Miniature Bull Terrier. The dog was then taken to an animal shelter, according to the cantonal veterinarian for canton Zug.
The canton’s veterinary service, informed by the Zug police, immediately launched an investigation. A risk analysis of the dog’s behavior showed that this dog posed a much greater risk and that such an incident could happen again. According to canton veterinarian Rainer Nussbaumer, the result of the risk analysis is based on how the incident was reported by the police, the injuries suffered by the child in question and the origin, breed and aggressive behavior of the dog. “The analysis was then explained to the owner and, in consultation with him, it was decided that the animal could be euthanized,” says Nussbaumer. That’s why a character test was also waived.

The situation would have been different if the owner had refused to pay the consequences. Then further clarification would have been done as standard. Nussbaumer: “The owner was very perceptive, saw the problem and didn’t want to take the risk that something could happen again.”
As Nussbaumer went on to say, the Mini Bull Terrier was a year old and his owner was attending the volunteer young dog course at the dog school. There is good news from the child who was bitten by the dog, as Nussbaumer says he is on the mend.
The dog bite incident took place on Saturday afternoon, shortly after 2:30 pm, in the municipality of Neuheim ZG. Two boys aged nine and ten were together outdoors when an unfamiliar dog suddenly ran towards them. The one-year-old Miniature Bull Terrier suddenly bit the nine-year-old boy first on the genitals and then several times on the face.
The bull terrier was in the care of a 60-year-old woman who was looking after him for her son at the time of the tragedy. “We’ve done this before, nothing happened,” she told Blick. The dog even attends a special dog school and “never became aggressive.”
However, the bull terrier got loose when the woman wanted to put him in a box in the apartment. “You could hear kids laughing, it probably scared him. He jumped out the window and disappeared. I ran after him», says the woman. She arrived at the crash site too late: the boy had already suffered several bites and had to be taken to a hospital outside the canton with Rega. (20M)
Prevent biting incidents
Statistics on biting incidents in the canton of Zug do not show any accumulation of biting incidents in certain dog breeds. According to the cantonal veterinarian, all dog breeds can be involved in biting incidents, depending on the situation.
By attending dog training courses and acting responsibly on the part of dog owners, for example putting a leash on in unclear situations, an attack can be avoided as best as possible.
