NGO Ecomov has reported a 300% increase in the amount of international garbage found on the beaches of São Paulo’s coast since 2019. The last collection, carried out between September 2022 and May 2023, collected 1,600 items of foreign origin, including carcinogenic and corrosive material (see photos in the image gallery below).

The garbage collected in São Vicente and Peruíbe in the Baixada Santista accounts for 75% of the international material collected on the state’s coast.

In São Vicente, the majority of the waste originated from China and Malaysia, with 40% originating in China and 20% in Malaysia. Products from Turkey and Russia were also found.

Garbage from China was the most common in Peruíbe, accounting for 37% of the material collected. Products from the USA, Sweden, Germany, Turkey, Malaysia and Singapore have also been found in the city.

According to Rodrigo Azambuja, President of Ecomov and environmental educator, the materials collected range from food packaging, personal care items and cosmetics to products for cleaning and maintaining basements, sealants, adhesives and products containing metabisulfite, which he says is highly carcinogenic and corrosive.

A tally prepared by the NGO Ecomov indicates that the international litter index on the coast of São Paulo has increased by 300% since 2019.

According to Azambuja, the first recording and collection of material containing metabisulfite occurred off the coast of São Paulo in 2019. Since then, he says, new packaging containing the product has been found every year.

beach surveillance

For the g1the president of the NGO said that this Thursday (25) the organization opened a Conduct Adjustment Term (TAC) with the Specialized Action Group on the Environment (Gaema) to monitor all the beaches on the coast of São Paulo.

The aim of the initiative is to catalog the objects found in order to put pressure on the authorities to step up controls on ship cleaning, since, according to him, most of the international garbage that ends up on the beaches comes from ships sailing in the create ports of the state.

O g1 asked Gaema for a position but received no response as of the publication of this article.
