Housing crisis: rental apartments only for “vegetarians”

The rental markets in Toronto and Vancouver are so insane that landlords are picking the tenants they want based on their “vegetarianism” or gender, while offering exorbitant prices.

In both of Canada’s major cities, the challenge is already finding affordable housing for the middle class. Many apartments are rented out at insane prices, some even without a bathroom.

On search sites like Facebook Marketplace, it was even possible to find a garage in Toronto that could be rented as a liveable studio for $880 a month, although there was no kitchen or bathroom.

Some apartments have no windows at all or windows that are not considered emergency exits. A semi-basement with two tiny windows can easily rent for $1,900 a month.

Others rent closets that they convert into bedrooms for $1,400 a month, or even offer to share the room with other roommates for $600 a month, even if that means sleeping in bunk beds.

Some owners even go so far as to claim that people are vegetarians, pointing out that meat and eggs are not accepted in the apartment. Several advertisements also demand that the tenants should only be women.
