Brennan Phillips just had to settle in.

The freshman pitcher found himself on the biggest stage of his young career in second-seeded OSU’s Big 12 tournament game against sixth-seeded Texas Tech on Saturday.

Phillips got the starting shot in a Cowboys eliminator and ran into trouble during the opening inning when the Red Raiders placed runners with an out at the corners.

But after Phillips recorded a strikeout in the second out, he fought Texas Tech’s Gavin Kash to the max. Phillips placed a radiator up in the hitting zone and Kash took a swing to the floor to end the inning.

OSU never fell behind in their 8-1 win over Texas Tech, thanks in large part to Phillips. The former Owasso High School star allowed just one run and recorded seven strikeouts in six innings played, the best of his career.

OSU will play Texas Tech again on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Arlington, Texas. The winner advances to the championship game, where they meet fourth-placed TCU at 5:00 p.m. Sunday.

Phillips got a lot of help from OSU’s thugs.

David Mendham got the ball rolling at the end of the second inning. After scoring five RBIs in a win over OU on Friday, the senior hit an RBI double to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Mendham got home on the following shot when Marcus Brown powered a ball into right field for an RBI single.

OSU then added six runs in the next two innings to secure an 8-0 lead.

Tyler Wulfert led the attack. After hitting an RBI double in the third inning, the junior struck again in the fourth inning.

Wulfert hit on a pitch from Texas Tech’s Jase Lopez and sent a laser shot into right field for a two-run single.

Texas Tech’s only run of the game came from Hudson White, who sent a ball up the top deck in left field early in the fifth inning to hit a solo home run there.

But Bayden Root dashed all hopes of a Texas Tech comeback. The senior pitcher earned the save by hitting three strikeouts in three shutout innings.

Wulfert led OSU with three RBIs and a 2-for-4 hit run. Nolan Schubart also had two RBIs and two runs with 2-for-4 hits.
