Türkiye: Erdogan was declared the winner by the electoral commission

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won Turkey’s presidential election, the country’s electoral commission has confirmed.

According to several counts, Mr. Erdogan, who has been in power for twenty years, would receive more than 52% of the votes against more than 47% for his opponent Kemal Kiliçdaroglu.

The leader of the second largest opposition coalition party, Meral Aksener, has conceded victory to Erdogan, the New York Times reports.

Mr Kiliçdaroglu, in a televised address this afternoon, did not dispute the preliminary results forecasting the outgoing president at the helm.

For his part, Mr Erdogan claimed victory during a speech from the top of a bus.

“Our nation has entrusted us with the responsibility of governing the country for the next five years,” he says.

69-year-old President Erdogan won 49.5% of the vote in the first ballot on May 14, compared to 44.9% for his opponent.
