Lula wished Erdogan a “good mandate” and said the Turkish president could count on Brazil’s cooperation for peace and the fight against extreme poverty in the world.

“Greetings @RTErdogan on your reelection as President of Turkey. I wish you a good mandate with a lot of work for the benefit of the Turkish people. And count on Brazil’s partnership in global cooperation for peace and in the fight against poverty and development in the world,” he wrote to the Brazilian president.

By the time this report was last updated, 99.66% of the ballot boxes in Turkey had already been counted in the second ballot. Erdogan was ahead with 52.13% of the vote, versus 47.87% for his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

Narrow reelection

Erdogan’s victory contradicts initial polls that pointed to a possible defeat.

Polls identified the strong coalition of six parties around a common candidate, Kilicdalogru, and the Turkish president’s poor assessment of the earthquakes that struck the country earlier this year, killing more than 50,000 people, as factors in Erdogan’s defeat, polls have identified.

This means that Erdogan can enter the third decade of government strengthened, in which experts point to more authoritarian measures, a rapprochement with Russia and a distancing from Europe and the USA.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, 69, has ruled Turkey for more than two decades. He was Prime Minister and is now winning his third consecutive term as President.
