Weather: Here are some tips for braving the first heatwave of the year

Quebecers in the south-west of the province will need to stay hydrated to brave the intense heat and blazing sun over the next four days as an early heatwave is expected on Tuesday.

“We will experience what is commonly referred to as our first heat wave of the year. From Tuesday to Friday, for example, we expect temperatures of more than 30 degrees in the greater Montreal area,” André Cantin, meteorologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada, told the journal.

He adds that this heatwave will mainly hit southwestern Quebec, including the Capitale-Nationale, Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Centre-du-Québec regions.

“We’re not expecting oppressive heat at the moment,” says Mr. Cantin. The humidity remains bearable. The Humidex should therefore remain below the warning thresholds.”

anything but normal

The meteorologist also notes that temperatures this time of year will be higher than normal at around 22 degrees.

“However, this is not the earliest heat wave. Last year we had one on May 12th, 13th and 14th. That was unthinkable,” the specialist recalls.

However, according to Environment Canada, the heatwave we will experience this week will be among Quebec’s “top 5 earliest heatwaves”.

never seen

André Cantin reports that the week has already started with record heat in Montreal for May 28th. On Sunday the temperature rose to 31.2 degrees.

“The old record was 31.0 in 1978. We undercut him by quite a bit,” says the expert.

According to Environment Canada, further heat records are expected in the metropolis on Thursday. Temperatures are expected to reach 33 degrees while never having risen above 31 degrees before.
