She accidentally transfers $1,637 to another credit card issuer… and has trouble getting a refund

A Pointe-Calumet mother who mistakenly paid $1,637 to the Capital One Master Card has been trying to get her money back since mid-February.

“I don’t know what to do, I’m discouraged!” says Johanne Sauvé, who is multiplying the steps to get her money back.

When Ms. Sauvé tried to pay the balance using a Desjardins-issued credit card on February 17, she got the wrong recipient and transferred the money to Capital One Mastercard. When she realized that, she pointed out her mistake. Capital One would then have confirmed that it had received the money but would not be able to pay him back without providing his credit card number.

Bad luck: Johanne Sauvé had not used this card for five years and even destroyed it, but forgot to remove Capital One from the transferees. She also ran out of credit card statements, and Capital One would not have sent her any more after receiving the $1,637 payment. However, as Ms Sauvé has lived at the same address for 16 years, her contact details were up to date.

“There’s always an excuse for not paying me back! I’m really tired, it’s been almost four months since it lasts. Desjardins told me I sent documents to Capital One, which sends the documents back to Desjardins and restarts the ball,” says the man who works in a warehouse and earns a salary of $20 an hour.

To tighten the belt

Ms Sauvé, who has three children, lives with a hole in her budget because even though she couldn’t get her money back from Capital One, she had to pay off her remaining credit card balance at Desjardins to avoid high interest rates.

“I can’t go out anymore because my account has dropped so much! I ride my bike as much as possible to avoid having to pay for gas because it’s expensive. I also have to pay for a house,” she says desperately.

After several steps, a Desjardins employee came to her aid to find out the number of the Capital One credit card that Ms. Sauvé had provided to the institute last week.

“They told me they would refund me if I found my full card number and they said it doesn’t work that way and we need to investigate because it doesn’t mean I’ve paid!” But I did sent the bank receipt that I paid $1,637 when I had no funds at Capital One!” says Ms. Sauvé at the end of her wits.

Capital One did not respond to our questions.
