Guatemala celebrated the 38th anniversary of its Magna Carta

Guatemala City, May 31 (Prensa Latina) The Guatemalan Congress (unicameral) held a solemn session to mark the 38th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic, which was officially promulgated on a day like today in 1985.

Minister Marvin Alvarado read Decree 2-86 that marks the anniversary, while several MPs from the IX. legislature reaffirmed their commitment to legislate for the benefit of the people and to ensure compliance with the people’s inherent rights and social development.

They reiterated the need to put the judicial system in motion, teaching every boy and girl in this Central American country the contents of the Magna Carta to ensure compliance.

The law highlighted that in the First Ordinary Period 2023-2024, from January 14 to May 15, ten new decrees and seven agreements were adopted, focusing on issues of economic and social support and institutional strengthening, among others.

High-ranking officials of state institutions, authorities of the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Court, diplomats accredited in the country and other special guests attended.

The Supreme Law came into effect here on January 14, 1986, after a constituent assembly, elected by popular vote almost two years ago, presented a draft following a turbulent political period.

It consists of three parts: the dogmatic part, which lists the rights, duties and fundamental freedoms; the organic, with the organization and basic structure of government; and the practical part, divided into constitutional guarantees and defense of order.

Guatemala’s first constitution was created in 1808. In it, the Captain General based his laws and regulations on the normative document known as the Bayonne.

Over the years it has gone through numerous processes and changes to strengthen its legal bases.
