President Lula (PT) will visit Paris on June 2223 to fulfill an agenda that includes a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Planalto’s presidential adviser told AFP.
Lula and Macron already met on May 20 at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, where, in addition to the Russian war in Ukraine, they also discussed bilateral defense cooperation and expanding exchanges “in the cultural sphere,” according to the Brazilian Presidency .
In a phone conversation in January, Lula invited Macron to visit the country and see the shipyard in Rio de Janeiro where a nuclear submarine is being built, the result of cooperation between the two countries. So far, the French Presidency has not announced a travel date to Brazil.
Lula’s return to power in January revived relations between Brazil and France. Macron and former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) have not had good relations, particularly over the former captain’s criticized management for protecting the Amazon, seen as a key resource in the race to mitigate climate change.
A day before Lula’s activities in Paris, the President will meet Pope Francis at the Vatican, confirming the President’s recommendation.
Francisco and Lula spoke on the phone Wednesday about defending peace in Ukraine and fighting poverty. The Brazilian President invited the Pope to visit the country.
