Park rules require guests to keep a distance of 23 meters from bison, elk and deer. Walters told the New York Times that he was just trying to save the animal from drowning.

Clifford Walters was visiting Yellowstone Park on May 20 when he saw a baby bison. The calf had separated from its mother when the herd crossed the river.

Walters approached the bison and pushed the animal out of the water onto the path where the herd was. However, the plan didn’t work out and the animal was rejected by the herd itself.

Park rangers tried to release the cub back into the wild, but to no avail. The park administration then decided to do so Sacrifice the puppy to prevent the animal from approaching cars and people in the park.
