Disney hasn’t ruled out Johnny Depp’s comeback in the Pirates of the Caribbean series

The possible return of Johnny Depp to embody his legendary character Captain Jack Sparrow in the new film Pirates of the Caribbean has not been ruled out by Disney.

The 59-year-old actor was pulled from the franchise by the company in 2018 because the company wanted to bring a “new energy” to the popular films.

But in a recent interview with The New York Times, Sean Bailey, president of Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, opened up about the future of the sixth film and left the door open to Depp’s possible return.

“We think we have a really good, compelling story that honors the films that have come before, but also has something new to say,” he said.

When asked if Depp could be part of this story, Bailey replied that the studio was “non-binding at this point.”

And while it’s not a straight yes, it’s not exactly a no either.

Depp last played the swashbuckling character in 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Last year, rumors of Depp returning to the franchise also circulated.

It was reported at the time that the actor was negotiating a “$300 million deal” with Disney after winning the defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard. However, later sources confirmed to that the information was false.

The Edward Scissorhands star previously told judges he would no longer be working with Disney after being dropped from the sixth Pirates film.

His legal team claims Depp lost $22 million after Heard published her 2018 Washington Post editorial in which he did not identify Depp but clearly branded him a domestic abuser.

Depp said he felt he was “guilty until proven innocent” to Disney executives.

Depp sued Heard over the comment she authored, describing herself as “a public figure who advocates domestic violence.”

The jury ruled in Depp’s favor on all three of his allegations, which related to specific statements in the 2018 article.

After a six-week trial last year, Heard was found to have defamed her ex-husband and ordered her to pay him over $8 million in damages – although they later settled for $1 million, to put an end to their litigation.

In 2018, a Disney producer claimed that Depp would not be asked to return, saying he wanted to bring a “new energy” to the popular films.

New ideas to bring the franchise to life, including a female-led Pirates of the Caribbean starring Margot Robbie.

However, in an interview with Vanity Fair last year, the Oscar nominee revealed that the film’s much-anticipated fate will not materialize.

“We had an idea and we evolved it a long time ago to have a more female-led story — not just female-led, just a different kind of story — which we thought would have been really cool.” “But I guess they don’t want to do it,” she said of Disney.

It’s been a good few weeks for Depp, who received a seven-minute standing ovation at the premiere of his comeback film Jeanne du Barry during the Cannes Film Festival last month.

The film is Depp’s first project since being banned by Hollywood in the years following Heard’s 2016 abuse allegations.

The 76th film festival also marked Depp’s first red carpet appearance since his court victory.

The Edward Scissorhands star was greeted with applause and support from a sea of adoring fans upon his arrival.

Depp couldn’t hide his excitement at being back in Hollywood, having previously been sidelined from several projects during the trial, including the Fantastic Beasts film series.
