During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the 36-year-old star opened up about how her family reacted to the news. The actor, who publicly revealed his trans identity in December 2020, said his family didn’t accept that he was gay.
According to the publication, her mother, the daughter of a pastor, told her that homosexuality did not exist. Initial reactions from his family led to his self-destructive behavior, including restricting his calorie intake and hitting his head with a hairbrush. However, he added that his family, especially his mother, has become more tolerant over time.
“I find it really inspiring that she has changed and become such an advocate and ally,” said the Juno star. It took a while for her to break away from the ideas she grew up with. »
Elliot Page added that his mother seemed to feel a “sense of relief” after his transition, as “she could see that he was comfortable with himself.”
The Umbrella Academy actor is currently promoting his autobiography, Pageboy: A Memoir, which was released Tuesday.
