The explosion happened at the Nova Kakhovka dam in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine. Control of the area is disputed between Russians and Ukrainians.

Russia and Ukraine exchanged allegations about who was responsible for the dam breach. According to the United Nations, 42,000 people are now at risk from the floods.

Thousands of people had to leave their homes. Ukraine said Russia committed a war crime, while Moscow said Kiev committed a terrorist attack.

After the dam was destroyed, the water level rose by about 3.5 meters, so houses in Kherson were under water. About 80 communities are threatened by flooding.

According to the Ukrainian government, several people took shelter on the roofs of their houses and awaited rescue.

On the Russiancontrolled side, a zoo on the banks of the Dnipro River was completely flooded, killing 300 animals living there.
