‘This show broke me’: Tom Holland announces he’s taking a break from acting after a ‘rough time’ on the set of a new psychological thriller

Tom Holland has announced he’s taking a year-long break from acting after his last role “broke” him.

The British actor is starring in the new AppleTV miniseries The Crowded Room, due out on the streaming service later this week.

Starring and producing the dark psychological thriller was “tough,” Tom now admits.

And after two busy years, which also included starring in blockbuster films Spider-Man: No Way Home and Uncharted, Tom, 27, is ready to retire from the spotlight.

In an interview with ExtraTV, Tom said that after working on The Crowded Room, “I’m now taking a year off and that’s because of how difficult that show was.”

He added, “I’m excited to see how it will turn out and I have a feeling our hard work hasn’t been in vain.”

In the AppleTV series, Tom plays Danny Sullivan, a young man who is arrested on suspicion of committing a gruesome crime and slowly reveals details about his fragile psyche during interviews with an interrogator, played by Amanda Seyfried.

“It was definitely a tough time,” Tom recalls of his time on set. “You know, we explored certain emotions that I’ve definitely never experienced before, and on top of that, the fact that as a producer I’m struggling with the day-to-day issues that come with every film set, that added pressure.” ‘

“But I really enjoyed it, I loved the learning curve of being a producer.” I’m no stranger to hard work, I’ve always lived by the idea that hard work is good work. And I really enjoyed it.’

“But then again, the show broke me. There came a time when I thought, “I need a break.”

The busy actor – who has a long-term relationship with Zendaya – took a week off after completing the project to “go into hiding” in Mexico but is now longing for an extended break from work.

The Crowded Room, created by Akiva Goldsman, is slated to be in development in 2021.

The program was inspired by Daniel Keyes’ 1981 non-fiction book The Minds of Billy Milligan, which was about the person of the same name.

Milligan, who was arrested for committing various felonies, was eventually cleared of his crimes after professing insanity after being diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder.

During the trial, he claimed that several of his surrogates committed the crimes and that he was unaware of his criminal activities.

The actor previously spoke to Entertainment Weekly and explained that his involvement in the project has prompted him to re-evaluate his own mental health.

“It was very life enlightening to learn about mental health and its power and to talk to psychiatrists about Danny and Billy’s issues,” he said.

Tom added: “I hope people educate themselves about the forces of mental health, the struggles [and] our incredible survival skills.’

The premiere of “The Crowded Room” is currently scheduled for June 9th on the AppleTV+ streaming service.
