Elle Fanning has revealed the ‘disgusting’ reason she wasn’t landed a specific role at 16.
The now 25-year-old star was actually considered “unbeatable” at the time. “I never told that story, but I tried to make a film. I did not understand it. I don’t even know if they ended up making it, but it was a father-daughter comedy with a road trip,” she said during the Hollywood Reporter’s Comedy-Actresses Roundtable.
“I haven’t heard from my agents because they didn’t want to tell me anything like that. This filtering system is really important because there are probably a lot more hurtful comments out there than the ones that come to us, but this one touched me,” she continued. I was 16 and one person said, “Oh, she didn’t get the father-daughter road trip comedy because she’s unfuckable.”
Elle Fanning added, “It’s so gross.” And I can laugh about it now and say, “What a gross pig!”
When asked how she handled those comments at the time, the Maleficent actress said she’d always been “hugely self-conscious.” However, she admitted it was “strange” growing up in the public eye.
“I look at paparazzi photos from when I was 12 and I’m like, ‘Is it a good thing to see a mirror like that of yourself at that age?’ I don’t feel like it hurt me, but it certainly made me feel very confident,” she explained.
Actress Dakota Fanning’s younger sister said she feels “very protected” as a child star. Elle Fanning also added that she’s had the same “awesome manager” since she was eight or ninth and started her acting career when she was just three years old.
