Lula, Lukashenko and the International Labor Organization
The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a former trade unionist, voted to abstain in today’s ILO (International Labor Organization) vote condemning the repression of trade unionists and violations of workers’ rights in Belarus, Vladimir Putin’s greatest ally decided . “One of the goals of Brazilian diplomacy is to avoid positions that could affect your candidacy as a possible mediator in a dialogue between Russians and Ukrainians,” the Brazilian press wrote today.
Belarus is one of Russia’s most important allies in the war. Alexander Lukashenko is like a dictator Nicholas Maduro, which is why it has been sanctioned by western governments. At the end of the vote, Lula’s government asked for an explanation of its position and reiterated that for Brazil, any decision taken by the Committee and the International Labor Conference must preserve the possibility of addressing the human rights situation in Belarus “through dialogue and people’s engagement” with the Minsk government with the ILO and other multilateral organizations. That’s why Brazil is abstaining.” There is very little solidarity from a former unionist with the unionists arrested by Lukashenko, but after all, after what Lula has said about Maduro, that’s not surprising.
