Already in September 2022, Colleague Loïc Tasse And Me We were interested in the case of these migrants who were brought to Martha’s Vineyard by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Not only does he seem to have done it again, this time in California, he may well face charges.
That governors like those of Texas and California want to take brilliant steps to bring immigration to Washington’s attention is legitimate, but must be done with respect for the law and for human life.
A disgusting scheme
As in the case of Martha’s Vineyard, the city of Sacramento in California has just taken in migrants, mostly Colombians and Venezuelans. They arrived in two separate groups but were each transported on the same private plane.
If the California authorities cannot confirm this for the time being, the state of Florida and a private company (Vertol Systems Company) would be involved in the movements of these migrants.
Migrants who have spoken out say they don’t know who organized the flights. Only the papers in their possession indicate that Florida was involved.
The strongest reaction came from California Governor Gavin Newsom. The one we also give presidential aspirations to, mentioned DeSantis’ name in a tweet and threatened him with legal reprisals.
What threat can Newsom pose? It is illegal to trick migrants by lying to them or denying them jobs. That’s what Vertol employees did to encourage migrants to go to California. Newsom quickly made kidnapping allegations.
When you’ve traversed much of the continent and risked your life and that of your loved ones, you become an easy target for vile promise sellers or political crap in search of attention.
The scammed migrants claim to know very little about the true intentions of those who contacted them, while pointing out that they may have been government officials.
In Texas, a sheriff files a criminal complaint
She may well follow the actions of Vertol and the Florida authorities if we trust the news from Texas. The Bexar County Sheriff is recommending criminal charges in the Martha’s Vineyard displaced migrant case.
It is now up to the Attorney General to decide whether to proceed, but we already suspect that an affirmative opinion would have a direct bearing on the California Governor’s decision to carry out his threat.
Anyhow, I doubt these threats will be enough to keep DeSantis and his ilk in check as the US presidential cycle is just beginning. We will continue our election campaign on the backs of the weakest.
