Brewer’s shortstop goes deep against O’s in the first action since he was hit in the head with the liner
13 minutes ago
MILWAUKEE — A dozen days after being hit in the left temple by a foul ball, Willy Adames was back in the big leagues. The only sign of his ordeal was a small spot under his left eye.
Adames said a doctor told him when he saw video of the incident: “You were lucky. You have a really hard head.”
“I was like, ‘Everybody knows that,'” Adames replied.
The Brewers reinstated Adames after the seven-day concussion in IL on Wednesday, and he heralded his return by hitting a solo home run in the first inning, hitting a highlight reel doubleplay in the second and a double in a 10 in the third delivered -2 victory over the Orioles at American Family Field – a remarkable comeback given the severity of his scare.

On May 26 against the Giants, Adames, a two-time club MVP for the Brewers and the team’s leader in nearly every offensive category since arriving via a trade with Tampa Bay in May 2021, leaned in the dugout while Brian Anderson battled it out in the second inning American Family Field.
Anderson hit a 90 mph line drive foul that surprised Adames, hitting him in the side of the head and sending him staggering down the steps to the bench, where he was promptly tended.
Adames was taken to the hospital where he stayed overnight for observation. He said he had a CT scan that evening around 8:30 p.m. and another at 4 or 5 a.m. the following day.
“I remember everything,” Adames said. “I remember when I got hurt. I haven’t lost my memory or anything. I remember every second of it.
“It was pretty shocking. Obviously I was a little scared right after I got hit. You really don’t know what’s going on in there until you get hit like that. After taking the picture in the hospital, it kind of calmed me down. After that I knew I was safe.”
Adames’ phone filled with messages of recovery, including from Anderson, who was feeling horrible.
“I didn’t know I was loved like that,” Adames said. “I got a lot of support from former teammates, from my teammates here, a lot of friends, people I didn’t expect to get text messages from. It was special to see that people were concerned.”
Adames landed in the IL the following day, briefly visited the ballpark on Sunday with a swelling around a black eye, and then spent several days recovering while the team was away.
Late in the week, he joined the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to resume practice and even attended a game with a catcher’s mask at the urging of coach Matt Erickson.
Adames was the Timber Rattlers’ designated batsman for rehab on Sunday. And instead of boarding a plane to play a few more games at Triple-A Nashville as originally planned, he headed to West Michigan on Tuesday to play another game with the High-A club at shortstop.
At every step, Adames passed the test.
“He gradually increased his activities and there were no problems. None at all,” said Brewers manager Craig Counsell.
Adames said he was pushing to return after hitting a double and a home run in his first game with the Minors, but the team’s medical staff preferred he played at least one night game to ensure the lights did not cause concussion symptoms.
When he passed that test, the Brewers picked him up. Rookie infielder Brice Turang was selected for Triple-A Nashville.
“My body felt good and everything was pretty normal,” Adames said. “I came today and went straight to Counsell’s office. He already knew. He told me, “You’re in there.”
“He knew I would ask him to play today. We were on the same side.”
Any chance of Adames still wearing the catcher’s mask in the dugout?
“I could. It’s scary man,” he joked. “You only really realize it when something like this happens. We’re always here, joking and having fun. We don’t think about it until something like this happens. Obviously I’ve.” I feel like I’ll pay attention and worry more now. …
“I feel like after that everyone will pay more attention to the game. But I will continue to be myself. It won’t stop me from what I’m doing.”
The Brewers were happy to see him smile again.
“I felt like I just got lucky,” Adames said. “I have been blessed.”
