Three people are killed in a dam collapse in Ukraine that was destroyed by Russia

Three people died and seven are missing after the collapse of the dam at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, the Ukrainian government announced on Thursday (8). Russia has already pointed out that five people have died in the region.

The Kakhovka Dam was breached in an attack in southern Ukraine on Tuesday (6). The region is currently controlled by Russia. The European Union (EU) is already saying the blast could constitute a war crime.

Russian news agencies also report that after the power plant was destroyed, 14,000 homes were flooded and 4,300 people were evacuated from the area. However, the Ukrainian government states that the number of flooded and rescued properties is higher.

Zelenskyy in the region

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday he had visited the flooded Kherson region in the south and discussed the situation after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam.

“Many important issues were discussed. The operational situation in the region as a result of the disaster, evacuating the population from the zones of possible flooding, eliminating the emergency caused by the dam explosion, organizing life support for the flooded areas, etc. Restoring the ecosystem in the region,” Zelensky posted on Telegram .

The governor of Kherson said on Thursday that 600 km² of the region was under water most of it on the Russianheld side of the river and that almost 2,000 people had already evacuated the affected areas.
