What is near the dam?
⬆️ Above the river is the Zaporizhia nuclear complex. The explosion could affect the plant’s cooling system and cause concern at Europe’s largest plant;
⬇️ Below the barrier lies a region of Kherson that was recaptured by Ukrainian forces.
📍 The city and the entire region are currently controlled by Russia.
The two countries exchanged allegations of authorship of the attack. The safety of this dam has been a concern since the beginning of the war.
Ukraine’s Ukrhydroenergo hydroelectric power station said the dam was damaged by an explosion in the engine room, which is under Russian control. According to the company, the plant cannot be restored.

What Russia and Ukraine say
The Kremlin called the dam explosion a terrorist act by the Ukrainian government and said it had launched an investigation.
Kiev, on the other hand, denied responsibility, blaming the Russian troops. For weeks, local residents have complained of flooding due to poor management of the hydroelectric power plant by the Moscowinstalled interim government in the region.
According to the Russian state agency RIA, 22,000 people could be affected. According to the Ukrainian government, 80 villages could be flooded.
