"It was full of poison": Snout snake bathes lizard in poison

In April this year, a snouted snake was filmed dominating a monitor lizard in Kruger Park, South Africa. The shot was taken by Helen Young, who walked around the area and shared the images with the Latest Sightings website.

Helen told the website that she took advantage of her husband’s climb to take a walk outside of the camp. “Not far down the road I found a very strange object in the distance and couldn’t make out what it was. I slowly approached and was surprised to find a huge snake trying to confront a large monitor lizard,” she recalls.

The animals approached the car as if cornering the driver on the road. “I didn’t want to move my car so as not to startle the snake,” he said. She remembers that the lizard showed tremendous strength pulling the snake across the road.

“Over time, I could see the lizard getting weaker. It had obvious bites on its neck and was full of venom.” Despite this, the lizard managed to escape the snake’s jaws a couple of times and made a quick escape. Unfortunately, the snake caught him again and he stopped.

“In the end, a car drove by at high speed, which startled the line. I stayed with the monitor lizard for a long time to see what would happen. Except for a few tongue movements, he lay motionless on the street. I’m guessing it got run over, but at least it should have fed something at the end.”

The snout snake is an aggressive snake, it is potentially neurotoxic and is classified as extremely dangerous.
