A series of drone flights over Bundeswehr training areas fuel the suspicion of military espionage against the Bundeswehr. For this reason, the security authorities are investigating some suspicious flights in Saxony-Anhalt at the Altengrabow military training area (Jerichower Land), as reported by the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung (Mz). “In Altengrabow, an average number of incidents were reported this year.”
“A large part of the drone sightings took place at night,” said a spokesman for the Bundeswehr’s territorial command. According to information from the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, reports Ntv, suspicious flying objects have often been reported between 10 p.m. and midnight in recent weeks. For reasons of military security, no further details of the investigation could be disclosed, the command said on request. “The Bundeswehr works closely with other security authorities such as the respective state police, the federal police and the Federal Criminal Police Office,” said the command. According to the news announced by Mz, the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) was also activated. The Bundeswehr spokesman emphasized that drone flights over Bundeswehr locations are generally prohibited.
Illegal drones have also been sighted in other Bundeswehr headquarters in recent months. According to the command, there were “a large number of reports about drones at Bundeswehr locations” in the current year. “The Bundeswehr has therefore created a catalog of measures for all locations in Germany. Among other things, this involves the use of countermeasures against drones such as the HP-47 system. “This anti-drone gun interrupts the connection between drone and GPS through targeted interventions,” the spokesman explained. Commercially available drones then either returned to the pilot or landed. However, not all drones could be fought with the HP-47 system.
