Almost a year and a half after the launch of the Xperia Pro-I, Sony is working on a successor. The Japanese manufacturer’s next flagship would build on the core quality of its predecessor, but go beyond it. Sony would actually bet on putting two 1-inch sensors on the back of its phone instead of just one.

At the end of 2021, Sony proudly presented its Xperia Pro-I. Above all, the high-end device claimed a photo experience worthy of an imaging professional and lived up to its ambitions, at least on paper, with the integration of a large Exmor RS photo sensor. 1 inch should offer “2.4 µm pixels”. Even if the latter was ultimately only partially used, the Xperia Pro-I still offered a top-class photo experience, as we explained in detail in our test.
This summer of 2023, and while the Xperia Pro-I now seems somewhat forgotten, we learn that Sony would be working flat out on a successor… and that the latter would not double the bet with the presumed integration of not a 1 inch sensor, but two.
Two 1″ sensors for the price of one?
At least that’s what figures leaked in Japan and shared by the specialized website GSMArena suggest. We discover the alleged design of the new Xperia Pro-I II with two large 1-inch sensors positioned one above the other on the back of the device. A design and quite a credible approach, even if it is better to take tweezers and wait for additional information to leak, ideally from other sources; or downright a teasing launch from Sony via official channels.

As GSMArena points out, another rumor has surfaced recently. This time it hints that a future Sony smartphone, without going into further details right away, would come with a “pixel sensor with two layers of stacked transistors”. Something to reshuffle the cards a bit, although at this point it’s not known if this rumor relates to this potential Xperia Pro-I II or some other device. The same applies here: caution… and patience.
