Who could resist pretty fragrant and very red strawberries? These are numerous and varied in the shops. But how do you choose them? A recent study found the presence of many pesticides in fruits from a specific country. Without further ado, we will give you more details about this information.

A German study found that Spanish strawberries contain many pesticides

It was a German study that revealed the presence of large amounts of pesticides in strawberries from Spain. These toxic products are both harmful to us and the environment.

Specifically, these are fruits from the province of Huelva. The German magazine that published this information analyzed a total of fourteen tablets. Thirteen came from Spain and one from Egypt. The tests were carried out in the laboratory on some fruits taken from each of the skins.

The results were catastrophic. With a few exceptions, the many strawberries under the magnifying glass revealed a large amount of pesticides. One brand in particular shocked analysts because its fruit contained up to seven molecules different.

Toxic molecules banned in Europe

These include ethirimol and cyflumetofen. The first pesticide is a fungicide. It is used to destroy parasitic fungi. The problem is that it is very toxic to pollinating insects. In addition, this molecule is banned in Europe. It should therefore not occur on Spanish strawberries.

The only explanation that can justify this analytical result is the following: the chemical composition of the pesticide bupirimate, originally used to treat fruit, has changed convert to ethirimol. Bupirimate is also a toxic pesticide that is suspected of being carcinogenic.

The German magazine also analyzed organic strawberries from Spain. Unfortunately, the results are not more encouraging. Spinosad in particular contains pesticides. Nevertheless, the quantities do not exceed the legal limits.

Namely that this molecule, although toxic to bees, can be used in organic plants.

Environmentally harmful plants

The pesticides present in large quantities in Spanish strawberries are not only harmful to health, but also harmful to the environment. The first victims are none other than pollinating insects.

At the same time, Spanish strawberry cultivation is harming the planet in other ways too. These fruits grow on very large areas under a huge plastic sheet. However, the danger of this material for nature no longer needs to be proven.

Finally, you should know that the production requires a small kilo of strawberries 300 liters of water. And the province of Huelva is in Andalusia, a region that has been suffering from water shortages for several years. In order to irrigate their fields, farmers therefore dig illegal wells, which leads to the exhaustion of the reserves that are urgently needed anyway.
