Artist Roger Waters will not be able to wear the costume resembling that of a Nazi officer during the This is Not a Drill tour, scheduled for October and November in Brazil. According to Lauro Jardim of the O Globo newspaper, Flávio Dino, Minister of Justice and Public Security of Brazil, informed the Minister of the Federal Court of Justice (STF), Luiz Fux, that the artist should wear the uniform during one of his presentations in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília, Porto Alegre, Curitiba and Belo Horizonte are arrested by the federal police.
Luiz Fux called Dino to warn him about a crime of racism after representatives of the Jewish community made a request to do so. Days ago, the Justice Department received a request to prevent Roger from entering Brazil.
The motion was signed in Rio de Janeiro by attorney Ary Bergher, Vice President of the Israeli Confederation of Brazil (CONIB) and President of the Holocaust Memorial Institute. In the claim, Bergher requires that the artist be escorted by federal and civilian police when he enters Brazilian territory. That way, companies will follow the presentations and take action should Roger wear a costume resembling that of a Nazi officer.
understand the case
In May, during a concert in Berlin, the capital of Germany, Roger Waters was accused of inciting public hatred by wearing a costume resembling that of a Nazi officer. The Berlin police said they were investigating the case.
Berlin police spokesman Martin Halweg told AFP that “clothing worn on stage could be interpreted as glorifying or justifying the Nazi regime and disrupting public order”.
The police spokesman added that once the investigation is complete, the findings will be sent to the State Department for final legal analysis. Prosecutors will decide whether or not to prosecute the 79yearold British singer.
The singer took to social networks to comment on the case. On Twitter, he said his performance was a clear statement against fascism, recalling that portraying a fascist demagogue has been a feature of his shows since Pink Floyd’s The Wall (1980).
“My recent performance in Berlin has been maliciously attacked by those who want to denigrate and silence me for disagreeing with my political views and moral principles,” the artist wrote.
