Pale Rider. USA, 1985 (109 minutes). Director: Clint Eastwood. Cast: Clint Eastwood, Michael Moriarty, Carrie Snodgrass.

In 1985, Eastwood headed towards his big films. In 1988, a monument like Bird was supposed to be created, and in the 1990s it would produce almost a masterpiece every year. The seeds of it all germinated in a dark and almost abstract Western like The Pale Rider. Eastwood reworks Deep Roots’ codes to create not just a vigilante with no past, but a gunslinger who literally appears out of nowhere between chain fades. An explosive film directed by a ghostly character and underpinned by stunning cinematography by Bruce Surtees.

Following the notable platoon, Stone portrays Tom Cruise as a young volunteer who goes to war, only to return destroyed, paralyzed and disappointed. His tragedy is that of many others. Stone deals with the character, but also with those around him, and does so with firm conviction and dramatic rigor to offer an excellent anti-war film that eschews simple pamphlets.

“Hurricane Carter”

1686417483 348 Whats on TV today Sunday 11 June 2023

The Hurricane. United States, 1998 (137 minutes). Directed by Norman Jewison. Cast: Denzel Washington, Deborah Unger, David Paymer.

Bob Dylan popularized the drama of Rubin Carter’s life in his iconic song Hurricane. Irregular Norman Jewison approaches his story and creates a virulent anti-racist drama by following in the footsteps of this boxer who, en route to the world title, was accused of a triple crime he did not commit and sentenced to life imprisonment. And the thing is, Carter made a grave mistake: he was black in the United States in the 1960s. An emotional and hard-hitting film that, if far from perfect, captivates the viewer, carried by an overwhelming interpretation of Denzel Washington, in whose bleary eyes one can read the struggle and the desire for freedom.

Donnie Brasco

1679891306 295 Whats on TV today Monday March 27 2023

USA, 1996 (122 minutes). Director: Mike Newell. Cast: Al Pacino, Johnny Depp, Anne Heche, Michael Madsen.

A great interpretive duel between Al Pacino and Johnny Depp illustrates a tough and direct film that reflects the spirit of the classics of the noir genre. Donnie Brasco surprises even more when he finds behind the camera an inspired Mike Newell, director of the popular film Four Weddings and a Funeral. Newell had already surprised in 1985 with the great Dancing with a Stranger, another film with black flavors, but his career had slipped in the direction of average. His staging gives Donnie Brasco the necessary visual tension.
