Oliver Stone’s second Oscar. Also his second visit to the universe of Vietnam fighters. Following the notable platoon, Stone portrays Tom Cruise as a young volunteer who goes to war, only to return destroyed, paralyzed and disappointed. His tragedy is that of many others. Stone deals with the character, but also with those around him, and does so with firm conviction and dramatic rigor to offer an excellent anti-war film that eschews simple pamphlets.

Bob Dylan popularized the drama of Rubin Carter’s life in his iconic song Hurricane. Irregular Norman Jewison approaches his story and creates a virulent anti-racist drama by following in the footsteps of this boxer who, en route to the world title, was accused of a triple crime he did not commit and sentenced to life imprisonment. And the thing is, Carter made a grave mistake: he was black in the United States in the 1960s. An emotional and hard-hitting film that, if far from perfect, captivates the viewer, carried by an overwhelming interpretation of Denzel Washington, in whose bleary eyes one can read the struggle and the desire for freedom.

A great interpretive duel between Al Pacino and Johnny Depp illustrates a tough and direct film that reflects the spirit of the classics of the noir genre. Donnie Brasco surprises even more when he finds behind the camera an inspired Mike Newell, director of the popular film Four Weddings and a Funeral. Newell had already surprised in 1985 with the great Dancing with a Stranger, another film with black flavors, but his career had slipped in the direction of average. His staging gives Donnie Brasco the necessary visual tension.
