It’s the end of a series and a suspense of more than a month. In Colombia, the 4 children were lost in the Amazon jungle found alive this Friday, June 9th, by the research team that has been crossing the San Jose del Guaviare region since mid-May. This is announced by President Gustovo Pedro, who speaks of a “magical day”.
A month ago, the plane they were traveling on with their mother crashed in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. Since then, the children aged 13, 9, 4 and 1 have been left to their own devices. A 200-strong team searched for them.
For the National Organization of Indigenous Peoples of Colombia, “the survival of children is a testament to the knowledge and relationship of indigenous peoples to nature.”
An example of survival
Lesly (13 years old), Soleiny (9 years old), Tien Noriel (4 years old) and Cristin (1 year old) are wonders. The siblings survived the crash of their small passenger plane in early May. Her mother, pilot and co-pilot did not survive. The children were then left to their own devices.
The children’s chances of survival seemed slim in this hostile environment, inhabited by jaguars, cougars, snakes and other predators, as well as insects of all kinds.
A mobilization of a whole country
for 40 days More than 200 people searched for it in the Amazon rainforest. For weeks, soldiers and members of the indigenous community have been following the tracks left by the children, such as “freshly bitten fruit, a few footprints or diapers, a bottle and a pair of scissors”.
Survival kits and messages had been sent out from the helicopters criss-crossing the Amazon, encouraging the children not to move so they could be found.
The health of the children is very bad. They were transported to Bogotá by air ambulance on Saturday.
