Bus carrying wedding guests overturns, killing 10 in Australia

According to the BBC, ten people died and 25 were hospitalized after a bus carrying wedding guests overturned in Australia on Sunday night (11).

What happened

The 35 passengers were returning from a wedding in the Hunter Valley when the bus overturned while entering an offroad roundabout. At the time of the accident there was “heavy fog” in the area.

The driver was charged with dangerous driving, according to police, and was taken to hospital for tests. According to the Portal news agency, he is due to appear in court on Tuesday (13th).

The process to identify the dead continues and Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the crash site is “still an active crime scene”. The Acting Deputy Police Commissioner said the guests were arriving to settle down after the wedding.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it was “so cruel, so sad and so unfair” that a “happy day in a beautiful place like this should end in such a terrible loss of life”. “People rent buses for weddings to ensure the safety of their guests and that makes this tragedy even more unimaginable.”

A wedding guest said the day was a “fairy tale” until news of the accident broke. “We all panicked,” he said.
