RTL/ntv AfD trend barometer surpasses SPD

For the first time, the AfD is second on the weekly trend barometer, one point ahead of the Social Democrats. CDU leader Friedrich Merz is losing some support on the chancellor question.

The AfD has gained two percentage points this week and is ahead of the SPD on the trend barometer. In the survey by the Forsa research institute, the right-wing populist party appears for the first time in second place. União and others lose one point each, the other parties remain unchanged.

If the Bundestag were elected this week, the parties could expect the following result: CDU/CSU 29% (Bundestag election September 2021: 24.1%), AfD 19% (10.3%), SPD 18% ( 25.7%), Greens 14 percent (14.8 percent), FDP 7 percent (11.5 percent), Left 4 percent (4.9 percent). 9% of voters (8.7%) would choose other parties.

At 24 percent, the proportion of non-voters and undecided voters is slightly higher than the proportion of non-voters in the last federal election (23.4 percent).

In terms of chancellor preference, CDU leader Friedrich Merz lost some support from the previous week. In a constellation of candidates calling for Merz, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Economy Minister Robert Habeck, 25% would still choose the incumbent. Merz would vote for 21 percent of Germans if the chancellor were elected directly rather than by the German Bundestag – minus two percentage points. Habeck would pick 15%, one point higher than the previous week.

If Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock represented the Greens instead of Habeck, Merz would also lose two percentage points. In this constellation, it currently tops out at 23 percent. As in the previous week, 26 percent would choose Scholz and 19 percent would still choose Baerbock.

In the ranking of politicians, Scholz, Merz and Baerbock, but above all Habeck, lost confidence, more here.

When asked which party is best able to deal with Germany’s problems, 12 percent cited the Union, down one point from the previous week. 11% trust the SPD with political competence, up one point from the previous week. The Greens nominated 10 percent of Germans for this issue, the FDP 3 percent. For the first time, Forsa shows the AfD separately on this issue, and 7% consider it politically competent. 55 percent don’t trust any party to deal with the problems, 2 percent name another party – minus six points as the AfD was previously in this group.

Data on political sentiment was collected by market and opinion research institute Forsa on behalf of RTL Germany from 6 to 12 June 2023. Database: 2504 respondents. Statistical error tolerance: plus/minus 2.5 percentage points.
