The city issued a statement in the evening informing its residents that “a fire is currently raging near Lowball Lake” in the south.

“The priorities of the fire service remain human lives [et] the evacuation of cottages. The residents of the chalets at Lake Carheil are being evacuated.

Local authorities are asking local residents for help in contacting those who are unable to communicate in the area. We also ask that you avoid driving on Chemin du Lac Carheil and Chemin Comstock.

“In the near future, the fire poses no threat to the population and the expected rains should help contain it. We are closely monitoring the situation,” Minister Kateri Champagne Jourdain, responsible for the region, said on Twitter.

According to the Society for the Protection of Fires against Fire (SOPFEU) website, the fire threatening Fermont would cover 123.9 hectares.

This latest fire comes as the government announced its intention to gradually lift evacuation orders for several wildfire-hit communities in northern Quebec within 24 to 48 hours if all goes well.
