Man with schizophrenia swallows 12inch stick after request for ‘votes’

Doctors removed a piece of staff from a man after “voices in his head” told him to swallow the item.

According to the Chron website, the 52yearold man, who could not be identified, is from Guatemala and arrived at Roosevelt Hospital a day after the incident. He complained of severe stomach pains.

A report on the case said the man suffered from schizophrenia, which can lead to behavior problems, including hallucinations.

The tip of the stick protruded from his esophagus down his throat and splinters dug into the sides of the tube. The point of the object also bruised her abdomen.

The doctors tried to pull the baton across his throat, but the attempt failed. They then decided to surgically drill a hole in the patient’s stomach.

Scans showed damage to other organs, but no perforation was found. “He was still able to breathe because the wand had descended under the opening in the esophagus, which connects to the trachea and lungs,” the website says.
