According to a new report from the authorities, which was reported in the official press on Tuesday, six people died as a result of heavy rains that fell in eastern and central Cuba in recent days, causing significant damage to property.

The rains that started on Thursday gradually eased early in the week. Water began to recede in several provinces and thousands of evacuees began returning to their homes, Granma daily reported.
According to the same source, six people died, four in the eastern provinces of Granma, La Tunas and Santiago de Cuba and two in the central province of Camaguey.

“Without a doubt, this was an atypical event,” Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said during a video conference Monday night with provincial authorities.
“Even though in our country we are used to working in heavy rain, this is directly related to climate change,” he added, quoting the daily.
According to the head of state, “flooding has reached levels not seen in the past thirty years and in many places residents said it was the first time water had reached such heights, especially after extreme drought.”

Several provinces in the east of the country have been affected by drought for several months.
The rains damaged bridges, roads and sewage systems, and damaged several hundred homes. Thousands of hectares of crops, particularly sugar cane, have been destroyed.
